BBC Radio 1 takes to US airwaves
Radio 1 is to be broadcast across the USA. The BBC has signed a deal with satellite network Sirius. The station will be broadcast with a time-shift so Americans can also listen to Chris Moyles at breakfast, SCOTT MILLS in the afternoon and PETE TONG on a Friday night. Says Pete: "Such an important market for dance music and always seriously underserved by radio stations...this is a big breakthrough"
Until now, US listeners could only access Radio 1 via the internet. Station controller Andy Parfitt said: "This is such an exciting development. Radio 1 already has a strong international reputation amongst music fans around the world, including the US. "Now the station can be heard easily across America. With our commitment to great new UK music we hope that we can help British acts make in-roads into the massive US music market."
Sirius is available to US listeners for a monthly subscription fee and broadcasts more than 120 channels of music, talk and sport. It will begin broadcasting Radio 1 later this summer. Sirius's President of Entertainment and Sports, Scott Greenstein, said: "Radio 1 on Sirius will be a unique entertainment offering unmatched in the US. "It is renowned for its support of up-and-coming British artists, and reflects the enormously vibrant British music scene in its daily programming and special events. "Sirius subscribers will soon be able to hear Radio 1's cutting-edge music in their cars and homes."
