TIGA

Today’s pop divas can really move. Beyonce, Britney, Missy E., Mya, and definitely Janet all know how to let more than their backbones slip. But what if your backbone simply can’t slip? Do you stand a choreographic chance against the little big girls? If your name happens to be DJ TIGA, you most definitely do.

TIGA is a premiere DJ and producer in Montreal, Canada, but the video for his recent cover of Nelly’s 2002 monster hit “Hot in Herre” is taking him to downtown Los Angeles for one very big night in May. The very tongue-in-cheek, underground music video for his version of the song was recently nominated for no less than three MVPA (Music Video Production Association) awards, including Best Electronic Video, Best Video Made for Under $25,000 and Best Choreography. The competition in the choreography category is particularly formidable – Beyonce, Missy Elliott, Mya, Britney Spears and Madonna are also nominated – but not nearly so stiff as the TIGA video’s stars.

The choreography nomination comes in spite of the fact that the stars of TIGA’s video are marionettes. That’s right: wooden puppets. Make no mistake, however: thanks to the skillful manipulations of Thomas “Lord of the Marionette” Sontag, who co-directed the video with Alex Moulton of New York production company EyeballNYC, these marionettes are no Pinocchios. Backed by such hip-hop video excesses as multi-colored flashing light boxes, mirrored rooms, and a shower of diamonds, and dressed in glitzy clothes and jewelry, Sontag’s marionettes emphatically prove that they can bump, grind and break it down with the very best. One thing is certain: the ladies shouldn’t make room in their trophy cases just yet.

Can TIGA’s wood puppets out groove the legends and take home the big prize? We’ll find out May 20 at the Orpheum Theater in downtown Los Angeles.
