TIESTO

This is a world exclusive … an interview with the world’s number one DJ, TIESTO minutes after his 3.5 hour NYE set to 8,000 Aussie revelers. In Australia to play in Sydney and Melbourne on New Year’s Eve, Remix contributor Harley Augustine, scooped the world when he secured the superstar choon thrower’s only NYE interview …

What are your New Year’s resolutions?

--“It’s going to be my year!”

You’re repeating your solo stadium gig again this year?

--“Yes, in October … because May is too early, I’m going to be on tour then, I’m in South America for a month and two months in Asia so whilst I wanted to do it in May again, it was too soon …”

What will be different in this year’s gig?

--“I learned from the first one that I want to be more in control … because you work with a lot of people and sometimes you lose control … so musically I want to perform more of my own music … it was already 60% my own tracks last year, and this year I want it to be like 80% …but it takes time to make the music! …”

Will you tour the globe with it?

--“Yeah … I’m definitely going to take it around the world, but it takes time … in every country you have different rules, different venues, different promoters, different audiences so in Holland I’m pretty famous … like more famous than everywhere else in the world … I can’t walk down the street in Holland … I’m more famous than Justin Timberlake in Holland … it’s really different there, I can pack out a stadium of 25,000 in Holland but in Australia, for example, it’s more difficult … “

What happened to dance music in 2003? What was it “the year of ..”?

--“2003 was a year of searching, I think … in general, I mean a lot of DJ’s got lost and other’s came up, and I think it was a time of shifting … you saw it in the Top 100 DJ listing, so many new names … and I think next year there’s going to be even more new names because the crowd is evolving and there’s a new young crowd in, and they don’t know the old DJ’s … “

Do you think 1997-1999 will always be viewed as the Halcyon Days of dance?

--“They were the years of Trance, and during that time Sven Vath was a big influence on me … the Master of Trance … he’s a great DJ, he loves playing … I haven’t played many gigs with him, but I have been a lot of his gigs and the way he plays Trance is the way I like to play now … a bit of Trance, a bit of Techno, and the odd surprising record …”

Your sets don’t really fall neatly into a genre, do they?

--“No, I just want to play what I like, and that’s what the crowd wants as well I think … I go big ‘Big Trance Tune’, then ‘Funky Techno Tune’, whatever … and that’s what I think 2004 is all about … a lot of DJ’s mixing a lot of styles together and not just play one sound anymore … “

What is it about you that seems to set you apart from the rest of the superstar choon blenders out there?

--“It’s a great honour to win ‘Best DJ’ … it’s like winning an Oscar, you know … it’s like Nicole Kidman winning an Oscar … I have a cabinet at home for mine (jokes) … it’s a big honour, and I really appreciate it … I think at the end of the day, I’m the crowd’s DJ … when people see me play, the guys think ‘I could be him’, so they identify with me …”

What are your thoughts on Australia? Anything nice we can repackage for the Australian Tourism Board?

--“I hate Australia … Mark James, the promoter, is great to work with, and I have had a great time on both trips now … it’s an honour to play in Australia, all the DJ’s agree, and to be playing here on New Year’s Eve was very special for me … I loved this set here in Melbourne tonight …”

Is it hard being away from family and friends on New Year’s Eve?

--“No, I’ve been away on every New Year’s Eve since I started playing records when I was fifteen … they’re used to it by now! …”

Special thanks to TIESTO, and Mark James.
