DAVE SEAMAN

SINGAPORE : DAVE SEAMAN is the people's DJ. The super DJ, who is a mainstay in the British club scene with his brand of progressive house, believes that the crowd makes all the difference when a DJ spins.

"The only way to judge a nightclub is through the people," the 35-year-old icon told Today over the phone from England.

And his verdict of Singaporean clubbers: "Very responsive, very enthusiastic. It's great for a DJ to get that kind of response."

Seaman is no stranger to clubbers here, having visited Singapore "maybe about eight or nine times" to spin at various clubs and events.

The last time Seaman was here was on New Year's Eve at the Essential NYE 2003 event at the Singapore Expo Hall.

He returns on Friday to spin at Centro.

What should be music to the ears of clubbers is that he is a crowd-pleaser and not just because he is a famous name.

He said: "A bad DJ doesn't entertain a crowd. My job is to send as many people as possible home happy. There's no point in being self-righteous and playing things the crowds don't want to hear."

Seaman, who has been spinning records since he was 12, seems to be quite the music aficionado.

Strangely enough, he has listed Barry White, The Carpenters and The Beatles as the artistes he grew up listening to — music that is a far cry from the electronic beats that he is associated with.

And playing on his stereo at the moment are bands like Coldplay, Muse and the Stereophonics.

When asked about his eclectic taste in music, he said: "I try to listen to all sorts of music. I try to keep abreast of everything."

And that is why he does not want to sign on only progressive house acts for his record label Audiotherapy, which was re-launched last year.

He said: "I don't want to be pigeonholed as a progressive house label."

So, would hip-hop music make the cut? "Yeah, why not hip-hop?" he said. "Whatever is good, I'd like to put out." - TODAY
