STEFANOS

Walking on the streets of Leuven, Belgium, just at the age of ten during the winter of 1999, he came across a shop called Lovan Electronics. Not knowing what he was about to discover, he barged into the door and glanced in front of the first mixer he had ever seen. It was a JBsystems Premium 3 channel mixer which was a popular brand amongst Belgian DJs. Marked 70,000 BEF (about 160Euros) at that time, he looked at his parents and said "I want this for my birthday". With no hesitation, he asked the shop keeper if he had any in stock. As he arrived home, he hooked it up with his CD Deck and a Mini Disk Deck. Immediately he started fiddling with the bass and fader switches. A few months later he became a member of the famously known Rog Mogale Speaker Plans designs Forum where he became interested in Professional Audio as well as lighting. Money was a problem for a ten year old kid, so with a little help of his parents he managed to buy a small sound system. A Pretty basic 1200watt monitoring system which was used at home while his fellow Belgian neighbours knocked and banged against the wall. A few months later Steve heard the legendary known Thunderdome Hardcore Music, as well as the Retro Arena Compilations introduced to him by a friend named Peter Thomas, who was the only person he knew that owned Technics turntables. As Steve experimented with Peter's decks in his basement, Peter received a phone call from a DJ also called Peter that worked in their school. Peter Carkette, was going to organize an event for a group of students located in a Bar that was inside a train called 'Spoorloos Station Bar' and asked him if it was possible to hire the sound system. Obviously he accepted and around 6 pm he began setting up the sound system at the station bar. The first ever event was a total success. Starting around 8, a few other DJs played hip-hop and RnB while Steve played some local Belgian Dance Music which made the crowd go crazy while on a high dose of alcohol. When the event came to an end Peter Carkette was astonished by his talents and also because of his young age. Since Peter Carkette only had a few months left in school, someone needed to take over, and you know who it was! Peter Thomas had the idea of joining the Theatrical team at his school. Just at the age of eleven, they were taking care of the sound and lighting equipment supervised by Sound Engineer Dan Mitran. He played a big role in their hobbies as he was the one he would turn to if a technical problem arose. Regarding to his music collection, it wasn't very big so he researched for some music and came across Techno and House music. He discovered the Club System compilations which included artists like Dave Clarke, Josh Wink, Sven Vath, Richie Hawtin, Derrick Carter, Frankie Knuckles to mention a few. Although these artists were not appreciated at his school, he did not care, so he continued to listen to this style of music. Since he left Malta in 1997, he had no idea what the clubbing scene was like there. So with the help of the internet he learnt what kind of events were organized and by which DJs also. During the summer he spent his time in Malta, tutored by Daniel Jose who was vinyl based. Proper DJing was his next step, and that was mixing in 2 vinyls without missing a beat. In 2001 he bought a pair of cheap turntables, used for practicing his skills and later on were quickly replaced by the respected Technics 1200s MK2. Vinyl started piling up as he discovered HTFR, JUNO records and also a local record store in Brussels called "Fnac Music". During the big change of his DJing skills, he continued organizing events both in school and outside school. In 2002 he launched a small company with 2 other DJ's called the Miracle Club Rentals which consisted of Pro Audio + Light equipment available for rentals within the local area. During the summer vacations Steve went to Malta to discover the events and venues for the fist time. Amazonia in Buggibba was his ideal spot for entertainment with regular parties organized by pleasure promo and DJ Stevy Vee. As time went by, he continued practicing, producing compilations and mixes not just Techno/House but also Deep House music. Residencies were never his goal but recently DJ Stefanos joined Fever promotions and proud to be one of the resident DJs. He was always a type of DJ that played here and there in various bars and private parties when ever he was needed. In 2004 Steve left Belgium to continue his love for music in New York City. There he met DJ David Dee who was the founder of the clubbing scene in Malta. Compiling mixes for his online Deep Sessions show, regularly seen shopping at tower records or satellite records continuing to do what he always enjoyed doing. 'When discussions turn to music, I want everyone to mind their own business! All styles need their space but now move over because it's my turn!'
