Hailing from the small town of Burlington, WI, Luke’s musical talents were fostered with his 16+ years of experience behind the violin, along with multiple other instruments. But orchestras, recitals, and competitions could only take him so far. After he outgrew his average suburban CD collection, Luke was introduced to the underground electronic music scene, and was instantly hooked. “Seeing all types of young people coming together to dance and party was something I couldn’t pass up.”

In the summer of 2001, lukewarm purchased his first pair of turntables. He had many influences to draw upon, including the likes of local friend and musical mentor Edd Reynolds, as well as a plethora of mixtapes from legends Miles Maeda, Glenn Underground, Boo Williams, Mark Farina, Derrick Carter, and more. Naturally starting out experimenting with deep house, he eventually ventured into different genres. He now can be heard playing anything from jazz, to downtempo, to hip hop, to funk, to deep house, and finally to disco. “I love the idea of incorporating multiple styles into sets. It keeps the listener attentive, allows you to be a whole lot more flexible, and most importantly, it keeps everything fresh.”

As a promoter, Luke started out by establishing roots in one of Madison’s unique musical venues, the Bluefin. While promoting multiple nights there, he is best known for founding Madison’s longest running deep house weekly: Smooth Groove Tuesdays. Luke was also host of a weekly radio show entitled, “The Groove Movement” on Madison’s student radio station, which featured downtempo, deep house, and rare grooves supplied by local area djs. Between juggling school and multiple jobs, Luke was able to play out consistently, making appearances across Madison and holding down residencies at Bluefin, Majestic, Mercury Lounge, Natt Spill, Palm Gardens, and Pi.

As for the future, be on the lookout for more eclectic sets as well as some original production work. “An avenue I’d like to explore more of is live instrumentation alongside electronic music. That is gonna be a heavy influence on the electronic scene in the years to come.” Whatever the case, one thing is for sure: with lukewarm behind the wheel, it’s gonna be a fun ride.
