Ken Ishii's early infatuation with music arrived via the electonica of Yellow Magic Orchestra, Kraftwerk and DAF. It was a fixation he would follow until it led him to the work of Derrick May. Impressed and inspired, he subsequently immersed himself in what little techno culture and recordings made it over to Japan. His modern tastes include the Black Dog Productions and D-Jax Up Beats empires, whose experimental edge is reflected in his own 'techno futurist' works. These began with 'Rising Sun' for Dutch label ESP, before a double-pack R&S Records release, 'Garden On The Palm', and the Utu EP for Richie Hawtin 's Plus 8 label. Ishii's wild and bracing material, often reflecting the keyboard undulations of his earliest influences, have made him Japan's first and biggest techno export. He returned after an extended lay-off with 1999's Sleeping Madness, which featured collaborative work with Talvin Singh, Mekon and DJ Spooky.
