It is almost impossible to sit down with Jason Turner and the conversation not turn to music. Music seeps out of this DJ's pores onto everything that he touches. Everything is a potential instrument to Turner, from the table that he pounds out a beat on with his fists to the turntables that he spends hours putting all of his energy and emotions into.

"Mixing to me is letting your energy out onto the two records," Turner says. "Your anger or happiness or whatever you're feeling comes out onto the vinyl rather than keeping it all bunched up. Its a therapeutic thing. Turner prefers to not put together sets but rather mix on the fly making what ever he is playing work in some way or another which makes for some interesting sets. Kind of like a MC would Freestyle.

Using the alias Hyper J, Turner has made a name for himself in the local electronic music scene. He has played alongside other Drum n' Bass favorites, local and otherwise, including Dorian,Gremlin, the Dane,JFK tha Loax and Ben Ben. He most often can be heard as one-fourth of the Drum n' Bass foursome, the Smarmy Bass Kru,(smär'më) (bäs) (kröö)

Sleek low-pitched sounds from a group of people working together! Which includes Turner, 7ac, Kia Kani and Sam-R-I..

Since learning to DJ in 2000, Turner has played to various crowds around Nashville and a few other cities. He got his feet wet at a house party where he made great impression regardless of only knowing one person in the crowd. Shortly after that experience, he began to play at some local clubs, including th M.U.S.E., Paladium and D n'D, along with a few places in Clarksville.

Turner was born in Easton, Pennsylvania, where he lived till he ventured to Cashville, and now considers Tennessee to be his home.

Since he was very young.Turner remembers "beating on just about anything around the house that would make a sound". He began playing in the band in junior high school and, luckily for him, percussion happened to be the only instrument that school provided to band members for free. But, after numerous fights in school, Turner quit the band and found a new outlet for his love of music.

He began building and installing cae stereo equipment, which helped him to perfect his ear and learn more about the technical aspects of music. Not aware of the label of "electronic music." he began to listen to the genre because of the intricacy of the beats and bass. He didn't know what it was, but he knew that he liked it.

Turner soon discovered Drum n' Bass and felt connected to the beat patterns that he heard." It brings back memories of the hip hop that i listened to, but the beats were a hundred times better in there own ways," he says. Soon after, he started mixing records over at his friend's house. "He must have seen something in me because he always encouraged me to get on the tables and to stay with it. "Big Up's Ian. As he usually does he quickly rose up in his game, regularly playing out less than six months later.

Turner has taking a break from performing out at parties so he can concentrate on his family and production skills and wishes to make the music that he loves. He wants to explore making television commercials and movie scores. Spinning will always be his first love. Turner is set to start SAE soon and looks forward to "beating stuff out with my hands on equipment (he is a hardware junkie),he says affectionately as only a true electronic musician could.
