Although originally from Vancouver, Canada; turntablist Grant Stetski is best known in Asia, where he tours almost constantly. As an article in South Magazine put it, 'Watching one of his shows is the perfect way to see how DJing has become the art form it is today.' Grant Stetski is a DJ that does, what so many others pretend to do. If you hear him dropping a mind-blowing mash-up- it is him. If you hear unbelievable cutting and scratching, it's not prerecorded- it's him. When you hear beat-juggling that would put most hip-hop DJs to shame, it's not a computer made mix- it is him.
Truly a DJ of all trades, Stetski can and does play it all. Long before he ever touched a cross fader, Grant was an avid drummer. He first started his love affair with vinyl during the 1997 rave scene explosion of the Pacific North West in Canada. He made the evolution from metal band drummer to techno DJ quite quickly. In those days, hard house was the name of the game and Grant, then known as DJ Shockwave was in the thick of it. His unbelievable timing had him cutting from track to track over 300 times a set. Most didn't know what to make of this new form of mixing which would later become known as beat-juggling. With only 6 months of Djing experience under his belt, he began impressing scene veterans and promotion companies like Neotribe Records and Nocturnal. He began becoming a regular on the glossy massives of the area. As the hard house scene breathed its last breathes , Grant was already inhaling the jungle sound. Like a chameleon he seamlessly changed his style and was soon accompanied by a talented Vancouver MC- Ozzius Atreides. Wanting to lose the Shockwave handle, Grant changed his name to DJ Vengeance. During this period, his addiction to scratching began. He spent upwards of 10 hours a day perfecting his fader and mixer tricks. It was more than a hobby, some would call it a bit of an obsession. All of this becomes blazingly obvious when you see what the man can do with three turntables and a Pioneer mixer. He also managed to receive his diploma in Audio Engineering at this time, which gave him a much broader knowledge of music and programming. He began making regular appearances on MTV Canada as their featured DJ and was looking for new projects to pursue. Those projects found him in late 2004. Grant was asked to drop everything and become the resident of a new club being built in Tainan City, Taiwan. He took the risk and after 8 years of paying his dues in the underground music scene- blew up. His styles changed again and he began filling his record crates with break-beat, electro and house cuts.
5 years later, Grant Stetski has become a dynamo in the Asian DJ scene. Manila Nightlife Magazine wrote that, 'His understanding and ability to play records while entertaining a crowd has led him to become one of the most amazing performers you will ever witness behind the decks. Grant is a true showman in every sense of the word, playing it all and playing the crowd." An article from 'Behind the Decks' also stated, 'I can honestly say he was one of the most entertaining DJs I have ever watched.'
His full-length mixes have become popular worldwide. It is not uncommon for him to have between 200-300 gigabytes of music downloaded off his site monthly. If you haven't seen him play, you are truly missing out. For a complete biography, pictures, video clips and CDs, please visit grantstetski.com
