GEORGE WILLIAM

The Saturday night resident of the Acid Lounge at The Guvernment Nightclub for almost the past five years has been none other than George William. For five straight hours, excluding encores, George is behind the tables playing the type of house music that makes people move.

No stranger to playing music, George has been spinning records since he was eight years old. Because his father was a disco deejay in the 70s there was always a set of tables for George to experiment with. And a piano thanks to his mother's choir activities.

Gaining residency at the Guvernment was an incredible achievement for George. He had been partying at Toronto's "super-club" for over two years, calling it "home" on Saturday nights. He describes the atmosphere as ultimately friendly, with a crowd truly devoted to music, and music trends. George reminded me "Some nights friends and I would be the first in line, and the last to leave, just trying to soak up all the music we could". George is now a major contributor to the excitement of Saturday nights, and special events at the Guvernment Niteclub.

Playing his second residency for the past 3 years every Sunday at Toronto's infamous afterhours club "The Comfort Zone", is also a remarkable accomplishment for such a young DJ.

House music is George's passion. He describes it as an eclectic blend of many origins. "House music can contain elements of disco, funk, jazz, blues, and soul music. It creates a groove or vibe that makes you want to get down, get into the music and manipulate the sounds with your body. You get a sense that most house music is created without the intentions of becoming a number one hit. It is created for people to listen to and dance to", said George.

Before landing his residency at the Guvernment, George spun records for mostly small parties in and around Toronto. Usually playing before a crowd of no more than 100 people.

But before all this, we could find George working at Traxx, a local record & rental shop, George became very familiar with a variety of DJing equipment. During his sets he uses this to his advantage often using external equipment for loops, and effects.

George has lived in the GTA his entire life. He is 26 years old. He has the support of his family, friends and now Guvernment club-goers. George's aspirations are no less than to tour the world to play the music he loves.

Also watch for upcoming productions by George William under the moniker "Better Than Orange".
