George Holland has been packing dance floors up and down the west coast with his relentless techno sets since 1994. His lightning-quick mixing and impeccable ability to read a crowd have ushered him to the forefront of countless shows and events.
George's DJ career began in Eugene, Oregon where he grew up listening to early hip hop in all of its forms. On a cold November night in 1992 a friend dragged him to his first rave and he was hooked on electronic music from that point on. The amazing sounds and energy, combined with the breakbeats that he had grown to love through hip hop, struck a resounding chord and inspired him to pursue this artform to the fullest. The hook was instant and irresistible.
A local DJ in Eugene finally gave in to George's ceaseless badgering for some practice on his turntables, and soon he was able to nail down some skills mixing early hardcore and jungle records. In time, his taste turned to the upbeat sounds of house music circa 1994/1995. It was at this point that he began to land bookings at medium-sized events, such as the legendary Tribe parties at the W.O.W. Hall.
Not long after that, the desire to rock bigger and better crowds led him to the city of Portland, Oregon, where he set up shop for the next year and a half. He soon became a resident of the Solar/Insight Production company alongside such DJ veterans as Doran (LA) and Mike Stevens (SEA).
After a brief stay in San Francisco in 1997 he returned to Portland.
George was rapidly becmoing a P-Town favorite, booking upwards of 5 and 6 times a month, including a residency at Portland's fabled Queer Night weekly. The sounds of house music became somewhat tame at that point and seeking something edgier, George started playing hard Chicago trax interwoven with techno.
In June of 1999 George once again relocated to San Francisco. It was in S.F. that he began to work with world-renowned Spundae Productions and landed a large number of bookings at 1015 Folsom during the summer of 2000. It was during this year that his musical style modified yet again: Straight-ahead pounding techno.
As the calendar turned to 2001, George found himself back in his hometown of Portland. The first booking in Portland after he moved back was a remarkable homecoming, as he played the coveted midnight to 2am slot on New Years Eve in front of over 2200 people. This honor was repeated yet again on New Years Eve as George was given the 11:30 to 1:00 AM slot at the northwest's biggest New Years Massive: Rise Up.
George Holland's brand of uncompromising techno has put him in demand and earned him the respect of peers and audiences alike. A partial list of the extraordinary talent he has played alongside includes: Doc Martin, DJ Dan, Frankie Bones, Derrick Carter, Junior Sanchez, DJ Lewis of The Orb, John Acquaviva, Scott Henry, Jerry Bonham and Terry Mullan.
And now, with more bookings on the horizon than ever, Geroge continues to bring his unyielding techno to the floors of the Pacific Northwest, and ultimately, the nation.
