Gareth Sommerville began djing In the late eighties, playing hip hop, funk and house at The Kangaroo Klub, quickly gaining a reputation as a tight mixer and an astute selector of records.

In 1991 Gareth was invited to become resident at two of the most exciting nights in Edinburgh at the time. Firstly, Tattoo, the night that introduced Edinburgh to the idea of House music all night long. Secondly, the Citrus Club which saw Gareth warming up for the likes of Terry Farley, Andy Weatherall, and Rocky & Diesel. This led to Gareth being recruited by the infamous Rhumba Club were he was resident for over 5 years.

In 1993 along with co-resident and co-promoter Colin Cook, Gareth started Truth, a night that pioneered the deep and funky American house sound in Edinburgh, laying down the musical blue print for all real house and garage nights that have since taken place in Scotland.

Later that year Gareth embarked on his residency, at the seminal YIP YAP, "which ruled Saturday nights in Edinburgh" (I-D Magazine) for almost 4 years. Miles Hollway and Elliot Eastwick reckoned that along with Kaos in Portugal Yip Yap was their favourite club in the world to play at. Roc and Kato claimed that, in terms of atmosphere, it was on a par with Angels of Love in Naples, while Pete Heller rated "YIP YAP was his favourite small club in the UK".

The phenomenal success of YIP YAP enhanced Gareth's already burgeoning reputation in Scotland, to the point that he was simultaneously resident at Cream (Glasgow) and on Friday nights at the world famous Sub Club. During this period Gareth was also a monthly resident for House Nation @ Sankey's Soap in Manchester; a specialist house night, promoted by John Burgess and Paul Benney (the team behind Bugged Out and Jockey Slut).

After Yip Yap closed in the summer of 1997, Gareth held residencies at The Honeycomb Club in Edinburgh, Luna In Dundee and Buddha in Glasgow.

In October 99 Gareth was re-united with Colin Cook and Ultragroove was born. This night has been a revelation, gaining a reputation as one of the best house nights in the UK. Musically, Ultragroove is as much about obscure Afro-beat and esoteric jazz house as life-affirming garage or dark tribal house.

Kerri Chandler: "New York needs a crowd and a space like Ultragroove"

Elliot Eastwick: "Three Favourite clubs in the UK: Robodisco, Ultragroove, Basics"

Guests who have played at Ultragroove: Cricco Castelli, Ashley Beedle, Miguel Migs, Pete Heller, Matthias Heilbronn, Benji Candelario, Terry Farley, Elliot Eastwick and Joey Negro, Pepe Bradock, Harri, Jerome Sydenham, Ricky Morrison, Kerri Chandler and Bill Brewster.
