CHRIS CALIX
Obviously, not every DJ is alike in regards to their style and technique. Chris Calix is one DJ that has spent the majority of his life perfecting his craft. Developing a style that is truly his own. To understand him and his brand of music one must travel back in time to his early childhood .Having been born and raised in Texas in the early 70s Chris's exposure to dance music can be directly linked to the conception and ultimate phenomenon that was Disco. His ears were drawn to the radio as far back as he can recall. Memories he has of his parents collecting and putting on vinyl are some of his most cherished. The record collection grew to include genres ranging from Disco to Funk and Salsa (introduced to him by his Venezuelan step-father). His parents, which at the time were college students, would take him to house parties where he ultimately found his niche. He eventually moved to South America in the early part of 1980. There his interest in music grew as he was bombarded with a heavy dose of Afro-American rhythms. And then came New Wave. After returning to the United States in 1984, Chris became obsessed with the Electronic, Rock-driven sounds of the early MTV generation. Whereas most children his age were out playing in the streets, his eyes and ears remained glued to the TV and radio. Soon after he would take his love of music to the training stages. While in the 5th grade, Chris's music teacher recognized his ear for music and recommended that he learn a classical instrument. His choice was the violin. A passion he embraced quite effortlessly. Over the next few years he would home his skills enough to be accepted into an orchestra. Training in Classical Music was highly important to him but his soul yearned for a groove. During his years in High school, Chris took on a part-time job at a local record store where his love of underground music took hold of him. And with the support of a good friend who, at the time, was a DJ at a local venue in Austin, Texas, Chris found his way into the DJ booth. He quickly rose in the ranks by playing his twisted version of Techno. Chris held a residency at the now defunct Paradox in the early 90s. His Trickery parties spanned only a few months but his love for spinning records was solidified. During the mid-90s, Chris took a break to attend university abroad. While living in the Caribbean, his love for DJing was reignited after being hired to spin at house parties. A passion that snowballed for soon he would be back in the club scene playing at various raves and venues. Upon returning to the States in 2000, Chris settled in Miami, Florida. There he has taken his brand of Techno to new levels. He has held residencies in many of the local venues. His most infamous parties included his Redlight Nights and Teaser bashes. He has had the pleasure of playing alongside some amazing talent including: Matthew Dekay, Bill Patrick, Dennis Rodgers, Austin Leeds and Steve Gerrard to name a few. Over the last few years Chris has formed a production company called Sovereign Productions. As for now, his style remains one that only years could perfect. The influences in his life have contributed greatly. To describe his sound, you take a bit of heavy grinding Minimal Techno and add an influx of groovy Funk. Then hold on to your pants!
