Touted by dance music mainstays Danny Tenaglia and Erick Morillo as possibly one of the most important new talents to emerge in the fiercely competitive dance community, DJ/producer Antranig's laid back, unassuming disposition belies the torrent of talent that distinguishes him in his field. His recent releases on the Sondos label and high profile DJ work have helped propel him to the cusp of global recognition, and realize that his possibilities are limitless.
From his humble beginnings in Union City, NJ, the piano was Antranig's first musical influence. Self-taught as a boy, he began to unravel the complexities of the instrument, graduating to a simple Casio keyboard at the age of eleven, and eventually going on to score the entirety of a school play. Upon graduating high school, he began making his own original music with a growing collection of electronic instruments, while also gaining a local reputation as a talented DJ.
Attending New York's prestigious School Of Audio Research gave Antranig an invaluable grounding in the day to day working of a recording studio, and allowed him to delve deeper into the aspects of his music production. Also, being influenced by a broad range of artists such as Depeche Mode, New Order, and Nine Inch Nails, gave him a solid musical foundation. His sound was slowly beginning to take shape. But the lure of the turntables and nightlife were not forgotten, thus serving as his entry into the dance music big league.
Antranig was no stranger to the nightlife, having regularly frequented New York City nightclubs from an early age. "I'd hang out at clubs like Limelight, Palladium, and the Tunnel" says Antranig. "I was just soaking in the all music being played by DJs like Danny Tenaglia, Junior Vasquez and Victor Calderone".
His first big break as a DJ came in '98 when he landed a Wednesday night residency at the famed Limelight nightclub in Manhattan. It was during this time when he was first exposed to Danny Tenaglia and his "Be Yourself" party at club Vinyl. Hearing Tenaglia's deep, unconventional, cutting edge style was both highly inspirational and pivotal for Antranig, both as a DJ and producer. He realized that there was a market for the kind of music he loved and loved to make.
Inspired by the event, he proceeded to make a demo, which he presented to Tenaglia. Duly impressed by the fledgling producer's talent and determination, Tenaglia took him under his wing, firstly offering him the open spot at Vinyl on many occasions and then as co-remixer on the club hits "The Door" by Circuit Boy Featuring Alan T (SPF Records) and "Lady" by Modjo (MCA).
Now a noted figure by those in the know in the club scene, Antranig met up with Subliminal CEO/DJ/Producer Erick Morillo who wasted no time in signing him to the Sondos label, which specializes in a darker, more minimalist sound. Under the auspices of Morillo, Antranig has produce a slew of underground club hits, quietly garnering a groundswell of support for himself and his unique sound that seems destined to explode in the upcoming months.
Releases thus far include "Submission", "Tie Me Up", and "Dangerous", which climbed to #5 on Billboard's Hot Club Play list. With his occasional collaborator Pons, releases include "Do It To Me" (EP), "Dance To The Groove", "Like This", and "NY Gridlock". Remixes include Praise Cat's "Shined On Me" (Sondos) and Who Da Funk's hit single "Sting Me Red" (Cream/EMI). Future collaborators include Alan T., Tom Stephan/Superchumbo and DJ Vibe.
DJ work includes various high profile Subliminal Sessions gigs in NYC, Pacha/Ibiza, Creamfields/UK, Mad/Switzerland, Amnesia/Paris, and Danztoria/Barcelona as well as playing along side such heavyweights as Erick Morillo, Danny Tenaglia, Tom Stephan, Josh Wink, and John Creamer, to name a few. In addition, Antranig and Pons are currently hosting a monthly party at Discotheque in NYC called "Tight", and can be found moonlighting at Crobar and various other New York hotspots.
Despite being known for his sound in the dance community, Antranig doesn't want to be typecast as strictly a house DJ/Producer. "There's more music out there than just dance music," he says. "I don't want to be limited to just one style. I'm a musician as well as a DJ and I'd like to allow all of my creative personalities to shine, whether it's through other types of electronic music, rock, film scoring, you name it."
"This is just the start."
